An oval measuring nine and a half inches by six and three-eighths, one inch tall overall. At under ten inches on its long axis it is a plate rather than a platter, and it behaves like one: a single appetiser course, a two-piece dessert, a sandwich with a small side, or a cheese and fruit presentation for one person.

An oval reads less formal than a round of similar area and fits a narrower cover, which is why ovals turn up on banquet tables where space between settings is tight. Bone white chinaware, with nothing on the rim to crowd a small arrangement.
