Safe sleep is strikingly undecorated
For every sleep, place a healthy baby on their back on a firm, flat, non-inclined surface made for infant sleep. The bassinet, crib, portable crib, or play yard should meet current safety standards. Use a fitted sheet and leave out pillows, blankets, bumpers, toys, positioners, and weighted products.
That can look almost too bare in a room full of nursery imagery. Bare is the point. If a product promises better or safer sleep, check it against current AAP and CPSC guidance before it reaches the sleep space.
Let feeding preferences reveal themselves
However feeding works in your family, begin with enough supplies to get through a day—not enough to open a small warehouse. Babies may reject a bottle shape, and pumping or nursing needs can change quickly. Singles and small packs protect both the budget and the cabinet space.
The most useful setup is often logistical: a water bottle for the adult, burp cloths in more than one room, a basket for pump or bottle parts, and a washing routine that can survive the middle of the night.
Buy for changes, spit-up, and the washing machine
Two-way zippers, wide neck openings, and soft layers beat elaborate outfits during the newborn stretch. Keep the rotation small enough that every piece gets worn and large enough that one difficult laundry day does not become a crisis.
A changing pad can live on a dresser or the floor; a dedicated changing table is optional. Put diapers and wipes where you spend time. The most beautiful nursery in the world is unhelpful if every change starts with a hallway trip.
Questions parents ask at this stage
- What are the true newborn essentials?
- A safety-compliant sleep space, fitted sheets, diapers and wipes, a few easy clothes, burp cloths, feeding basics, and an appropriate way to travel home cover the core. Add only what solves a real need in your home.
- How many swaddles or sleep sacks should I buy?
- Start with two or three, because fit and preference vary. Always follow the product instructions and current safe-sleep guidance. Stop swaddling when the baby shows signs of trying to roll, which can happen earlier than expected.
- Does a newborn need a full nursery?
- No. A safe sleep space in the parents’ room and accessible feeding and diaper supplies are enough to begin. Storage, décor, and a separate nursery can evolve around the way your family actually lives.
