Nine inches is the lunch size: large enough for an entree salad or a half-sandwich with fries, small enough that it does not swallow a modest portion the way a twelve-inch round will. The coupe profile means there is no rim eating into the usable face, so the whole nine and an eighth inches carries food. An inch of height gives a shallow lip that holds a sauce without turning the plate into a bowl.
