That depth holds a shallow sauce without the piece becoming a bowl, which suits a warm appetizer, a salad course or a brunch plate. It stays on the plate side of the ten-inch line, so it is catalogued as an appetizer plate rather than a platter. Three dozen to a case gives a section enough to run a full sitting without a wash cycle in between, and the speckled gradient carries across the whole uneven face.
