📘 Overview

The Haugen rod grapple is a skid steer root grapple built for rocks and brush — round rod tines spaced 3 inches apart, with independent grapple arms that close on uneven loads. Two series: the HRDG with 7/8" rod in 60", 68" and 76", and the industrial HIRDG with 1" x 1.50" bar tines in 76" and 84".

Both run 2-1/2" x 10" industrial cylinders with replaceable pin-on teeth and a 38" grapple opening.

🌳 Rod or Industrial — Where the Extra Steel Goes

Both series work the same way. The difference is the tine section, and at 76" you can compare directly: the HRDG weighs 1,046 lbs and the HIRDG 1,250 lbs. That 204 lbs is almost entirely tine.

  • HRDG, 7/8" round rod. Round section sheds soil and brush cleanly and keeps the attachment lighter, which matters on a mid-size skid steer where every pound of attachment is a pound off your load. Right for root balls, field stone, storm clean-up and general land clearing.
  • HIRDG, 1" x 1.50" bar. Rectangular bar set on edge, so the depth of the section resists bending where a rod would flex. For prying at buried rock, working broken concrete, and daily commercial use where tines take constant abuse.

Like every skid steer grapple in the Haugen range, independent arms on both series close separately, which is what holds a root ball or a tangled brush pile — a single clam grips the high point and lets the rest slip.

🦷 Replaceable Pin-On Teeth

Teeth are the wear item, and both series use pin-on teeth that knock out and replace rather than requiring welding. On a grapple working rock, that is the difference between a ten-minute job and a trip to the fabricator.

🚜 Skid Steer Compatibility

Universal skid steer quick attach, and an auxiliary hydraulic circuit is needed for the grapple cylinders.

Empty weights run 930 to 1,365 lbs. The industrial series in particular is heavy before anything goes in it — check your machine's rated operating capacity rather than assuming a grapple that mounts is one you can load.

❓ Skid Steer Root Grapple FAQs

What is a root grapple used for?

Clearing land. The 3" tine spacing lets soil fall through while roots, rocks and brush stay in, and the independent arms close on irregular shapes — root balls, brush piles, storm debris. You haul the material rather than the dirt around it.

HRDG or HIRDG?

The rod series has 7/8" round tines and is lighter; the industrial series has 1" x 1.50" bar tines and takes prying and impact that would flex a rod. At 76" the industrial weighs 204 lbs more, effectively all of it in the tines.

Why independent arms rather than a single clam?

Uneven loads. A root ball or a tangled brush pile is not flat, and a single full-width clam grips the highest point and lets the rest slide out. Two arms closing separately hold both ends.

How wide does the grapple open?

38 inches across the whole range, on both series and every width.

Are the teeth replaceable?

Yes — pin-on teeth that knock out and replace without welding.

Does it need hydraulics?

Yes, an auxiliary circuit for the 2-1/2" x 10" cylinders. Check your machine has one and that flow suits.

Are the teeth replaceable?

Yes — both series use pin-on teeth that knock out and replace without welding, which matters on a grapple that spends its time in rock.

How much do the rod grapples weigh?

930 to 1,046 lbs across the HRDG range and 1,250 to 1,365 lbs for the industrial HIRDG. The industrial series carries roughly 200 lbs more, effectively all of it in the tines.
