A plain round dinner plate 11-1/4 inches across, the standard American dinner size and the plate a dining room sets by default. Three quarters of an inch wider than the 10-1/2 inch round, which does not sound like much until a kitchen plates three components and wants white space between them.

The 1-1/4 inch lift at the rim keeps sauce in and gives a runner a dry place to hold. Because it carries no functional name it stays in general rotation: an entree at dinner, a full breakfast, a plated banquet course.
