Six inches is a generous saucer, and the width is deliberate: it gives the MA-1 low cup a wide enough landing that a spoon, a wrapped biscuit and a sugar sachet all fit beside the foot without anything riding the edge.
Its well is sized to the low cup's foot, so a cup carried across a floor stays seated instead of sliding at the turn. Matched to the rest of the Mayor service by its narrow rim, the saucer also stands in as a small under-plate for a ramekin or a condiment pot. Thirty-six to a case matches the cup count exactly, which keeps a service set in balance as breakages come through.
