Measuring 10 by 7 inches, this rimless oval is a plate rather than a platter: its long axis stops exactly at the ten-inch line, so it is sized for one diner's course and not for passing round a table.
The oval footprint suits anything longer than it is wide, which in practice means a fillet, a pair of skewers, a row of crostini or a long dessert. It stores better than a round of equal area because ovals nest tightly front to back. Two dozen to the case reflects that packing efficiency.
