The Unitronic UH009-ICA Intercooler Upgrade replaces the restrictive factory intercooler with a substantially larger, more efficient bar-and-plate core. It helps control charge-air temperatures during repeated acceleration, spirited driving, track use and higher-output tuned applications.

Unitronic designed this intercooler as a direct replacement for the factory core. Its T5052 aluminum construction, cast T6061 aluminum end tanks and proprietary internal fin configuration provide 64% more core volume than the factory intercooler while supporting applications producing more than 600 horsepower.

The result is cooler, denser intake air and improved resistance to heat soak without requiring bumper, radiator-support or vehicle trimming.

Engineered for Cooling Efficiency and Factory-Style Fitment

The 23.5 × 2 × 16.5-inch bar-and-plate core is constructed from T5052 aluminum and paired with TIG-welded T6061 cast-aluminum end tanks. Unitronic’s staggered and louvered internal fin configuration is designed to improve heat transfer while avoiding a significant pressure drop.

The end tanks use the factory mounting locations and include optimized inlet and outlet transitions. Bead-rolled hose connections help keep the charge hoses securely attached under boost.

Unitronic Intercooler Testing

Unitronic tested the factory and upgraded intercoolers on a 2015 Volkswagen GTI using its Dynapack hub dynamometer. Testing consisted of nine consecutive 20-second pulls with only 15 seconds of cooling between runs. The vehicle’s bumper remained installed, and ambient temperature stayed between approximately 68–72°F.

Despite slightly higher ambient and intercooler-inlet temperatures during the upgraded-core test, the UH009-ICA maintained substantially lower and more consistent outlet temperatures than the factory intercooler.

For the Audi 8Y S3:

Installation

Installation difficulty is rated 3 out of 5 by Unitronic. The intercooler mounts in the factory location and does not require trimming, but installation involves removing the front bumper and separating components within the front cooling stack.

Basic mechanical knowledge and appropriate tools are required. Professional installation is recommended for customers who are not comfortable removing the bumper and supporting the radiator and air-conditioning condenser during installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this intercooler add 600 horsepower?

No. Unitronic rates the intercooler to support applications producing more than 600 horsepower. Actual power gains depend on the vehicle, tuning and supporting modifications.

Is an ECU tune required?

No. The intercooler can be used on a stock or tuned vehicle without an ECU calibration change. Its cooling benefits become increasingly valuable with higher boost, warmer weather and repeated acceleration.

Can I retain the factory charge pipes and hoses?

Yes. Compatible factory charge piping can be retained. Unitronic silicone hoses and complete charge-pipe kits are optional supporting upgrades.

Does installation require trimming?

No. Unitronic designed the UH009-ICA for the factory intercooler location without bumper, radiator-support or vehicle trimming.

Does UH009-ICA fit the Audi 8Y S3?

Yes. Although most UH009-ICA applications use the earlier Gen3 MQB engine architecture, Unitronic also specifies this intercooler for the Audi 8Y S3. Use the 8Y-specific UH026-ICA, UH034-ICA or UH035-ICA supporting hardware when upgrading its hoses or charge pipes.

Does this fit a MK8 GTI or MK8 Golf R?

No. MK8 and MK8.5 GTI and Golf R owners should use the Unitronic UH023-ICA intercooler. UH009-ICA remains the correct Unitronic intercooler for the Audi 8Y S3.
