About this product
📘 Overview
The Star Industries 160A-HDSF is the single flight range of skid steer auger bits, built for most soil types — black dirt and sandy soil, highly compacted ground, heavy clay, asphalt, frozen ground and fractured rock. Eight diameters run from 6 to 36 inches, all 48 inches overall length. The single flight design digs faster than a double flight, carries more spoil out of the hole and leaves the hole cleaner and straighter. A rugged cast boring head does the cutting, universal Drive-In style teeth take the wear, and a patented coupler adds strength where the drill stem meets the drive.

🔑 Why Buyers Choose the Star Industries 160A-HDSF Single Flight Auger
- Single flight clears the hole instead of packing it — one continuous flight carries spoil upward without the material bridging between two flights, which is what leaves a hole straight and clean enough to set a post in without re-drilling.
- Drive-In teeth have nothing to seize — a bolted tooth on an auger spends its life in wet grit and comes off with a grinder two years later. Drive-In teeth knock out and knock in.
- The cast boring head is the part that decides bit life — the head takes the load at the centre where cutting speed is lowest and pressure is highest, and a cast head outlasts a fabricated one in compacted ground.
- Tooth count scales with diameter for a reason — a 36 inch bit carries 10 flat teeth against none on the 6 inch, because the outer edge travels further per revolution and needs more cutting points to avoid glazing.
- Fractured rock without stepping up to a rock auger — the HDSF handles frozen ground and fractured rock, so most sites never need the more expensive 160A-R carbide bit.

Every 160A-HDSF bit arrives with its teeth and pilot fitted and ready to drill. Wear parts are stocked individually so a worn bit is serviced rather than replaced: Drive-In flat tooth 160A-T04 and gauge tooth 160A-T09, hard-faced versions 160A-T04HF and 160A-T09HF for abrasive ground, the rubber clip lock 160A-T08 that retains them, and the 4.5 inch bolt-on pilot 160A-SB45 or hard-faced 160A-SB45HF. For deeper holes, fixed length shaft extensions are available from 24 to 72 inches, and a replacement 2 inch hex coupler is part 160A-112042A.
🚜 Which Auger Drives Fit These Skid Steer Auger Bits?
These bits connect to the auger drive unit rather than to the machine, so what matters is the drive output. Standard fitment is a 2 inch hex connection, which suits Star 160D drive units and other makes using the same output. An optional round drive version is available by adding the suffix B to the model number. If your drive and bit connections differ, two adapters cover it: 160A-AD01 converts a 2 inch hex drive to a 2.5 inch round bit, and 160A-AD02 converts a 2.5 inch round drive to a 2 inch hex bit. The drive unit supplies the hydraulics; the bit itself needs none.

What diameter auger bit do I need?
Match the bit to the hole, not the machine. The Star 160A-HDSF range covers 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 24, 30 and 36 inches. Fence and sign posts usually take 6 to 12 inches, deck and pergola footings 12 to 18 inches, and tree planting or larger structural footings 24 inches and up.
What is the difference between single flight and double flight augers?
A single flight has one continuous helix carrying spoil up the stem, which digs faster and leaves a cleaner, straighter hole because material cannot bridge between two flights. Star uses the single flight design on the 160A-HDSF dirt auger; the 160A-R rock auger uses double flighting because rock cuttings behave differently.
Can the HDSF auger handle frozen ground or rock?
It handles frozen ground and fractured rock, along with black dirt, sandy soil, highly compacted soil, heavy clay and asphalt. For solid rock and concrete, the 160A-R rock auger with carbide bullet teeth is the correct bit.
What are Drive-In teeth and why do they matter?
Drive-In teeth are retained by a rubber clip lock rather than bolted. On an auger working wet grit, bolted teeth corrode in place and end up needing a grinder. Drive-In teeth knock out and knock in with a hammer, so a worn set is a five minute job.
Can I buy replacement teeth separately?
Yes. The Drive-In flat tooth is 160A-T04 and the gauge tooth is 160A-T09, with hard-faced versions 160A-T04HF and 160A-T09HF for abrasive ground. The rubber clip lock is 160A-T08 and the 4.5 inch bolt-on pilot is 160A-SB45, or 160A-SB45HF hard-faced.
How many teeth does each bit size carry?
Every 160A-HDSF bit carries 2 gauge teeth. Flat tooth count rises with diameter: none on the 6 inch, 2 on the 9 and 12 inch, 4 on the 15 and 18 inch, 6 on the 24 inch, 8 on the 30 inch and 10 on the 36 inch.
Will these bits fit an auger drive I already own?
They fit any drive with a 2 inch hex output, including the Star 160D range. A round drive version is available by adding the suffix B to the model number, and adapters 160A-AD01 and 160A-AD02 convert between 2 inch hex and 2.5 inch round in either direction.
How deep will a 48 inch auger bit drill?
All 160A-HDSF bits are 48 inches overall length, so usable drilling depth is somewhat less once the coupler and drive are accounted for. For deeper holes, fixed length shaft extensions are available in 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72 inch lengths.
Does the auger bit need its own hydraulics?
No. The bit is driven by the auger drive unit, which is what connects to the machine hydraulics. The bit itself is a mechanical attachment to the drive output.
How do I order auger bits and how is shipping calculated?
Add the bit to your cart on eskidsteer.com and complete checkout online. Shipping is calculated at checkout once you enter your delivery address.
