About this product
The Hasami Porcelain Bowl in Natural is a blend of crushed Amakusa pottery stone and clay, fired unglazed, so what you touch is the material itself: matte, lightly textured, about two inches deep, sleeker than earthenware but with a texture that ordinary porcelain does not have. The weather, the mineral content of the clay, and the reactions inside the kiln leave each one a little different in color and texture, so no two are exactly alike. Takuhiro Shinomoto designed it in Venice, California in 2010, and it is made in Hasami, Nagasaki, where porcelain has been produced for four centuries.
The plate of the same diameter sits on top as a lid, which turns the bowl into a covered dish, and the ash wood tray of the same size does the same job. Five sizes, each matched to a plate, a tray, and a tall bowl, so a stack of same-diameter pieces stores as one column and comes out as a set.
