Sixteen ounces sits in a very broad shallow well, which is exactly what a dressed pasta wants: maximum contact between sauce and surface, minimum pooling at the bottom.
The wide flat field also makes it a strong base for risotto, a grain bowl, or a main course carrying a lot of separate components. A dozen arrive in a carton, and the piece is broad enough to seat a cover on its own rather than share the space.
