Yanco calls this a dessert plate, but with two and an eighth inches of depth and a ten-ounce capacity it behaves as a shallow bowl — the sort used for a plated dessert that needs containment: poached fruit in syrup, an affogato, a pudding under sauce. Nine and a half inches of diameter leaves plenty of negative space around a small portion, which is rather the point of the format.
