Square soup plates put the well inside a frame, and the MM-309 does it at 9" on a side with the floor sunk 1-3/8" below the border. Twelve ounces fills it to a sensible line, which in practice is a starter portion with the broad flat edge left dry.

That edge is the working part of the piece. A server lifts it without reaching over the food, and a spoon parks there between mouthfuls. The square outline also beds down flat in a rack instead of rocking. Miami's round equivalent at the same nominal width is the MM-3, so a kitchen can run both forms across one menu and keep a single pattern.
