Six and a quarter inches square is bread-and-butter territory: a roll and butter beside a cover, a small side of pickles, an underliner for a condiment dish, a single bite at the end of a tasting menu. It is the smallest of Fuji’s three plain square plates.

Where the sushi squares carry a functional name, this run does not, and at this size bread and butter is exactly the job — the plate that goes down first and comes back before the entrée. An inch and a quarter narrower than the 7-1/2" square in the same run, and cased thirty-six deep so a dining room can put one at every cover and still keep a spare rack. Magnesia-bodied chinaware, dishwasher and microwave safe.
