Twelve inches square with a one-inch rise — a serving platter sized for the middle of a table. Twelve by twelve gives a hundred and forty-four square inches of flat working surface, which takes a whole roast chicken jointed out, a dozen pieces of sushi in two rows, or a cheese and fruit arrangement for four people.

Square proportions suit a platter better than round ones when it has to share a table with other dishes: the straight edges butt up against each other and waste no space.
