They allow you to adapt equipment between the two most common sizes in the photographic industry by reducing a 3/8"-16 female threaded port to a 1/4"-20 female threaded port.&nbsp;</p> <p>The most common use is when mounting a tripod head with a 3/8"-16 port in its base to a tripod that has a 1/4"-20 threaded post. Some telephoto lenses also have a larger size port in their tripod collar and may need to be adapted to a smaller quick release plate.
