About this product

Nuvola means “cloud” in Italian, and pick up a ball and the name makes sense. There seems to be far too much yarn here for 50 grams.

That volume comes from a lightweight chainette construction and naturally lofty Falkland wool. Rather than packing the fibers tightly into a dense strand, the construction gives them room to expand and trap air. Nuvola fills out to a bulky 12½ stitches to four inches, with 106 yards in a ball that weighs just 50 grams.

That becomes a big deal once you're making a garment. Bulky yarn can give you wonderful oversized stitches and serious warmth, but a sweater's worth of it can also get heavy fast. Nuvola creates that substantial-looking fabric with much less actual weight, making it particularly well suited to oversized sweaters, long cardigans, and other projects where there's going to be a lot of fabric.

All that air also changes the surface. Nuvola has a pronounced halo that blurs the edges of individual stitches, so this isn't the yarn for intricate cables or detailed texture—they're likely to disappear. Stockinette, ribbing, simple shapes, and broad expanses of fabric give the halo room to become part of the design rather than something you're fighting against.

The result is a bulky wool that looks substantial, feels warm, and weighs surprisingly little—the rare case where “cloud” is actually a pretty accurate description.
