About this product
Angelus Leather Preparer & Deglazer is a leather deglazer that strips the factory finish off leather so Angelus Paint and Dye can bond and soak in. It's the first step in almost every Angelus custom or restoration, from painting sneakers to dyeing boots.
Each bottle is 5 oz. We've made Angelus shoe care products since 1907.
Why you need it
Most leather comes with a shiny factory coating. Paint and dye can't grip through it, which leads to peeling and patchy color. Deglazing removes that coating so your work lasts.
How to use it
- Wet a cotton ball or rag with Deglazer.
- Rub it over the leather in 3 to 5 passes.
- Keep going until the shiny finish is gone and the leather looks dull.
- Let it dry for a few minutes before you paint or dye.
What customers say
“This product works great getting my shoes ready before I paint them, it even gets rid of some stains and scratches on my white shoes, so I can paint on a blank canvas.”
★★★★★ Daniel P., Brooklyn, NY
“This does exactly what it is designed to do - prepare leather for a process. I used it to prepare for leather dye and found that the dye was absorbed perfectly.”
★★★★★ Elizabeth C., Palm City, FL
“Works 100% better than just acetone, perfect for preparing leather before painting!”
★★★★★ Terrion A.
Common questions
Do I have to deglaze before painting leather?
Yes. Without deglazing, paint can peel and dye can't soak in evenly.
How do I know the leather is deglazed?
The shiny factory finish will be gone and the leather will look dull and slightly rough.
Can I use it on canvas shoes?
You don't need to. Canvas has no factory finish, so just clean it with Angelus Easy Cleaner before painting.
