About this product
The Hasami Porcelain Tall Bowl in Black is a blend of crushed Amakusa pottery stone and clay under a matte black glaze, left bare at the rim where the raw clay shows as a pale contrast. It holds a straight-sided profile with no taper from base to rim, the deeper of the line's two bowl shapes, 3 3/8 inches across. Black is the finish that changes most with use, developing a patina from oils that gives parts of the glaze a faint metallic shine over time. Takuhiro Shinomoto designed it in Venice, California, and it is made in Hasami, Nagasaki, where porcelain has been produced for four centuries.
Each size shares its diameter with a plate that sits on top as a lid, a wood tray that does the same, and the lower bowl of the same width, so a tall bowl stacks into a single column with the rest of a set.
