These symbols of bygone years are cherished and kept up by historical societies. Some are still working now but are automated instead of having a lighthouse keeper on site to care for the lamps and horns. That duty now falls under the US Coast Guard for upkeep. If the Coast Guard wishes to transfer out the lighthouses they are given to the GSA, they allow Federal, State, County nonprofit through application processes. If no one comes forward, Lighthouses can they be auctioned to the public.
