The factory plastic pan tends to crack when it takes a hit, and a cracked pan releases its engine oil quickly. A steel pan will more often deform under the same impact and keep its oil where it belongs. It is still an oil pan, not armor, so it should not be treated as a skid plate or as extra ground clearance.

Why the Included Volkswagen Hardware Matters

The thin steel pan mounts with shorter bolts than the thick factory plastic pan. Reusing the original plastic pan bolts can keep the steel pan from seating and sealing correctly, which is why this kit includes the correct genuine Volkswagen conversion bolts and oil level sensor nuts rather than generic fasteners.

Important Compatibility Information

• Vehicles with a factory oil level sensor reuse the original sensor, secured with the included genuine Volkswagen nuts.
• Vehicles without a factory oil level sensor need a compatible block-off plate to seal the sensor opening in the steel pan, sold separately.

Installation Notes

• The factory plastic pan drains through a twist style plastic drain plug that requires a dedicated removal tool. The Metalnerd Plastic Drain Plug Tool handles it without damage.
• After removing the factory pan, clean the engine sealing surface thoroughly before applying sealant.
• Transfer the factory oil level sensor to the steel pan, if your vehicle is equipped with one.
• Apply the included Reinzosil sealant following the sealant manufacturer's application and curing instructions, and install the pan using only the supplied genuine Volkswagen bolts.
• Have fresh engine oil and a new oil filter ready before starting, and plan for the sealant's cure time before refilling.
• Professional installation is recommended if you are not comfortable servicing the engine lubrication system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why replace the factory plastic oil pan?
The plastic pan can crack when struck by road debris, speed bumps or steep driveway transitions, and a cracked pan loses its oil quickly. A stamped steel pan will more often dent or deform instead of cracking.

Does the steel pan work as a skid plate or add ground clearance?
No. It tolerates impacts better than plastic but can still be dented or punctured, and it does not change ground clearance. Pair it with sensible ride height and driving habits.

Can I reuse the bolts from the factory plastic pan?
No. The plastic pan uses longer bolts that can prevent the steel pan from seating and sealing correctly. Use only the genuine Volkswagen conversion bolts included in the kit.

Does the factory oil level sensor transfer to the steel pan?
Yes. Vehicles equipped with the sensor reuse it with the included genuine Volkswagen mounting nuts. Vehicles without the sensor need a block-off plate, sold separately, to seal the sensor opening.
